With PRN medication, is there a requirement that a detailed care plan is required per medication? Or is it sufficient to have protocols in medication care plans?
Dear T,
Thank you for your question.
You do not say which registered service you are working in but I presume it is a care home. If it isn’t please write to me again.
The care home should have a detailed policy and procedure for managing PRN drugs.
Part of the policy will say that when PRN drugs are being administered, a note should be attached to the MAR sheet explaining when and how the drug should be administered. If you administer a PRN drug you should record why the drug was given.
I hope this is helpful.
Sheila
