I work as a carer in the community. I would like to know, are male care workers allowed to provide personal care to a female service user?
Many thanks
Glynis
Dear Glynis,
Thank you for your question which is often asked.
It is important that this question is considered at the assessment of need and any decisions are part of the care plan.
This is a matter of consent too, either by the service user or their representative.
The senior management team will have normally carried out the assessment and will be part of the preparation of the care plan.
The decision must be properly recorded in the care plan and the agency would normally have a policy about this and the policy should be complied with.
Although this can be a complex question, the process for making the decision should be straightforward and the service users wishes should always be respected.
Best wishes.
Sheila
