Is a Registered Nurse's PIN affected if he/she works in a Care Home which is not registered with the CQC to provide nursing care? | QCS

I am hearing more and more of Registered Nurses working in Care Homes that are not registered with CQC for Nursing Care.
How does this affect these nurses PIN?

Dear G,

Thank you for your question.

This is my understanding of how a nurse retains their registration year on year (I am sure that if I am wrong a nurse will contact me when they read my response).

A fee has to be paid every year for a nurse to retain their registration and to stay on the register.

Every three years a nurse has to renew their registration by re-validation.

The requirements of Re-validation are:

Over a three year period the nurse has to have achieved:

  • 450 practice hours.
  • 35 hours of Continuous Practice Development (CPD)
  • 5 pieces of practice related feedback
  • 5 written reflective accounts
  • Reflective discussion
  • Health and character declaration
  • Professional indemnity arrangements
  • Conformation.

You can read all about revalidation on the Nursing and Midwifery Council website at:

http://revalidation.nmc.org.uk/what-you-need-to-do/practice-hours

Re-validation is a rigorous and time consuming process to go through.

I hope this is helpful.

Best wishes.

Sheila
