Should we care about culturally competent care? Absolutely! It’s essential in today’s diverse society, yet it’s often misunderstood or overlooked. Let’s take a moment to unpack what this really means and why it matters.
What is culturally competent care?
Culturally appropriate care, often referred to as ‘culturally competent care,’ is all about being sensitive to an individual’s cultural identity or heritage (Skills for Care), this means recognising and respecting the cultural backgrounds of the people we support. At its core, culturally competent care is about adapting care practices to meet the cultural needs of individuals, ensuring they feel understood, respected, and valued.
Person-centred care is at the heart of culturally competent care. This approach ensures that everyone receiving health and social care is treated with dignity and respect. Our social care and healthcare laws and regulations uphold this standard as well.
Our diverse population and workforce include people from hundreds of nationalities, cultures, faiths, and identities, all living and working together in various communities. However, simply having a diverse workforce doesn’t mean we’ve achieved culturally competent care. It’s not a box to tick off and then forget about.
Why does culturally competent care benefit you?
Providing effective and sensitive culturally competent care benefits everyone:
- People you support: They experience more personalised care, feel more understood
- Your workforce: It improves communication, reduces misunderstandings, and promotes team collaboration across cultural differences
- Your organisation: It improves your reputation, improves service delivery, and supports compliance with regulations
